The Challenge

The Hispanic American Periodicals Index (HAPI) at UCLA relied on a system of Excel spreadsheets, printouts, legacy PERL scripts, and physical filing to manage their indexing operations. With no centralized digital workflow or validation, the system was inefficient, error-prone, and difficult to maintain. [iS2 Digital] was hired to reverse-engineer and replicate the system digitally, capturing business logic and streamlining internal workflows.

The Solution

[iS2 Digital] worked with HAPI to fully reconstruct their back-end data management system, converting decades of manual and script-based processes into a secure, web-based application. The team translated varied business rules, mapped internal workflows, and delivered a custom administrative interface that dramatically improved the speed and accuracy of data entry and management. A positive ROI was reached after the first year.

Project Details

  • Reverse-engineered a hybrid legacy system with limited documentation.
  • Delivered detailed system architecture, flowcharts, wireframes, and specifications.
  • Consolidated processes from Excel, PERL scripts, and physical files into a centralized platform.
  • Built a custom admin system that streamlined workflows and reduced input errors.
  • Empowered staff to manage complex data relationships through a user-friendly UI.

The Client

The Hispanic American Periodicals Index (HAPI) provides bibliographic citations to the contents of scholarly journals published around the world on Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latinx communities in the United States since the late 1960s. Our coverage includes everything from political, economic, and social issues to the arts and humanities...

The database is a nonprofit project of the Latin American Institute, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and is available through annual subscription. Contact us for a free trial. Institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean receive free subscriptions.

Streets LA Home Page

LA Bureau of Street Services

StreetsLA faced a critical technology challenge that was impacting both their public-facing operations and internal efficiency. Their existing website was built on Drupal 7, a content management system reaching end-of-life, creating significant security and maintenance risks. The visual design was outdated and reflected poorly on the organization's brand as a forward-thinking public works department.

American Camp Association - Find a Camp Home Page

American Camp Association

The American Camp Association (ACA) envisioned a powerful yet user-friendly Find a Camp web application to serve multiple audiences, including Camp Directors, Association administrators, and, most importantly, parents searching for the right camp experience for their families. The platform had to be intuitive, responsive, on budget, and scalable to accommodate evolving user expectations and technological advancements.
