CEO Kevin Goldberg Joins Expert Panel to Guide Next Generation of AI Practitioners Through Real-World Municipal Technology Project

BEND, Ore. – November 25, 2025 – iS2 Digital CEO Kevin Goldberg recently participated in an innovative two-stage educational review process at Purdue Polytechnic Institute. Students in the program are developing an AI-powered Smart City Service Management System that has already attracted interest from city officials in Columbus, Indiana, for potential real-world implementation. Professor Missy Casner of the School of Applied and Creative Computing invited Goldberg and two additional industry experts to provide guidance designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world AI implementation.

The proposed AI-powered chatbot will allow citizens to report municipal service issues such as potholes, streetlight outages, and graffiti through 24/7 conversational interactions. The system queues requests for human review while minimizing friction between residents and city infrastructure. The initiative reflects a growing emphasis on practical AI literacy in computer science education. During the session, Goldberg emphasized the importance of incorporating Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), a technique that searches customized databases of specific content before querying the language model to generate more accurate results and minimize AI hallucinations.

Goldberg's participation in the review process stems from a decade-long professional relationship with Casner, who previously collaborated with iS2 Digital on a project for the American Camp Association. After Casner transitioned to academia, she established a curriculum model that regularly brings subject matter experts and industry professionals into the classroom to provide students with authentic professional experiences. "It's one thing to learn how large language models work and how to collaborate as a team, but taking the next step and presenting to external experts creates real-world tension," said Kevin Goldberg, CEO of iS2 Digital. "That type of experience within a computer science program is exactly what prepares students for professional practice."

The Smart City Service Management System represents a practical use case that municipal governments across the country could implement to enhance constituent services while maintaining human oversight of critical decisions. "The fact that Columbus is interested in this project is indicative of where we are with artificial intelligence and large language models," Goldberg noted. "I see this as a very viable use of AI to support city infrastructure and minimize friction between citizens and their municipal government."
